Welcome to Christ United Methodist Church Parish Nursing!

A Note from the Coordinator

WALK TO JERUSALEM - Looking for an excercise program? Join the Walk to Jerusalem! You can walk, run, swim, or do an aerobic exercise, just keep track of your miles. Each week you will log in your total miles in the book on the Activities Table (or email them in to me at jerilyn@connectingwithchrist.com). We will all be working toward walking from St Louis to Jerusalem (6,457 miles) by Easter, or as long as it takes to get there! For more information, stop by the Activities Table or contact the Parish Nurse office at 277-4659 ext 1881. You may join the walk at any time.

Welcome to Parish Nursing at Christ Church! I hope that if you are attending worship services that you have had an opportunity to check out the bulletin board, pick up some health and wellness information, and get your blood pressure checked..

If you or your loved one are going into the hospital or have health care needs, please call the church office (277-4659) and ask for the Parish Nurse on-call. We will be happy to help you with whatever we can. Remember, planning ahead if you know you will be hospitalized saves a ton of worry prior to discharge! Let us help you be proactive. If you are in need of a walker or other equipment on a short term basis, contact the Parish Nurse office for loaners.

Blessings,

Jeri Lyn Horowitz, RN

What is Parish Nursing?

Parish Nursing is a concept that was developed by Granger Westberg in 1982 in the Chicago area in response to a need for the Church to focus more on it's healing mission. Since nursing has always been a holistically oriented profession whose practitioners were not likely to have problems with being in a church building, Rev. Westberg felt that nurses were the logical choice to carry out this healing mission.

Parish Nurses are registered nurses and usually are members of the congregation they serve. They typically
work on a part-time basis (around 20 hours per week) during the first few years. Their salaries can be funded in part by an institution, such as a hospital, for 1-2 years, with the local church expected to fund the entire nurse's salary by the 3rd year
.

Parish Nurses Link Spirituality & Health

Committed to the belief that spirituality and good health are linked, Parish nurses treat body, mind and spirit. It is the emphasis on faith-based practice that distinguishes Parish nurses from nurses who work in secular institutions.
