Men's Accountability Small Groups

By Bill Lawrence

Men’s accountability groups are at the heart of the men’s MENistry at Christ United Methodist Church. Statistics have shown that an alarming number of men do not have a single close friend in whom they can confide, and with whom they can discuss critical life and faith issues. Development of such friendships takes time and commitment.

There are a number of ongoing man’s accountability groups at CUMC. The groups meet at different times and places, and each one has its own approach. Some may use a Bible study; others may review books, study guides and scriptures, and others just meet to talk about their faith and their family.

Most groups are open to new members, and others are reaching saturation and are seeking to form new groups. Generally speaking, the group size varies from three to six.

A common misconception is that men will feel uncomfortable and threatened in a small, intimate setting. It is true that it takes awhile for most men to feel relaxed and comfortable enough to open up and discuss some issues.

Another misconception is that men won’t discuss real issues, and that they limit their conversations to the weather, sports, etc. This might be true for surface relationships, but when men meet regularly and hold each other accountable, you would be surprised the depth of issues that are out for discussion.

Craig LaQuatte is in charge of the men’s accountability groups. He is currently deployed, but if you need any information, please feel free to contact Bill Lawrence at 236-7311 or email him at WLL5@charter.net. You may also contact Rev Bernie or Pastor Jeff at the church.

MEN-istry – what is it?  Who is it?  Do I have to belong?

MEN-istry includes the traditional United Methodist Men’s activities and organization, but it also includes related groups and activities.

We envision men’s special interest groups of all kinds to include such things as sports, small groups, retreats and events, hunger advocacy, mentoring, etc.  Our goal is to offer every man in the church an opportunity to be involved in an activity that he can be passionate about.

Do you have to belong or enroll?  No, by virtue of being a man attending CUMC, you are already included.

Christ Church has numerous activities that are specifically for the men of the congregation. These include: United Methodist Men, two out-of-town mission trips with “No Greater Love”, accountability groups, a weekend retreat, plus league teams in softball and competitive basketball.
